Materials and manufacturing of a short radius elbow
The centreline radius of a short radius elbow measures one time the nominal pipe size, whereas a long radius elbow has a radius of 1.5 times the nominal pipe size. Because of this smaller radius, the fitting requires less installation space but creates slightly higher pressure loss. A short radius elbow can be manufactured from carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, super duplex, nickel alloys and other specialised materials. Depending on the specification, fittings are produced from seamless pipes or welded pipes and comply with recognised standards such as ASME B16.9.

Although long radius elbows are generally preferred for optimal flow efficiency, short radius elbows are selected whenever installation space is limited. Typical applications include:
