Pinion shaft

Wide range of material grades

Standard and custom-engineered solutions

A pinion shaft is an integrated mechanical component in which the shaft and pinion gear are manufactured as a single unit. This construction provides accurate gear alignment, efficient torque transmission and improved reliability in demanding power transmission systems. PipingMarket.eu supports industrial projects by sourcing pinion shafts in a range of sizes and specifications.

Why is a pinion shaft manufactured as one component?

Unlike separate gears mounted onto a shaft, a pinion shaft combines both elements into a single machined component. This design eliminates assembly tolerances between the gear and shaft while improving concentricity and load distribution. The result is greater operational accuracy, higher torque capacity and reduced wear in applications where continuous power transmission is required. The final design depends on factors such as gear geometry, shaft diameter and transmitted loads.

How is a pinion shaft manufactured?

The most common types of elbows include:

Producing a pinion shaft requires both precision shaft machining and specialised gear manufacturing. After CNC turning, the gear teeth are generated using processes such as gear hobbing, gear shaping or gear milling. Depending on the application, heat treatment methods including carburising and induction hardening or quenching are applied to achieve the required combination of surface hardness. Final grinding operations may be carried out to improve tooth accuracy and surface finish.

Which specifications are important?

Every pinion shaft is selected according to the mechanical requirements of the transmission system. Typical specifications include:

  • shaft diameter and overall length;
  • gear module, number of teeth and pressure angle;
  • material grade and heat treatment;
  • bearing seats and mounting features;
  • dimensional tolerances and surface finish.

Alongside pinion shafts, we also source complementary bull gears, stepped shafts and hollow shafts for complete industrial projects.

The right source immediately

One day one of our team members was trying to find a source for special forgings. He searched within his network and the internet, but he couldn’t find the right source immediately. Even while google showed many results, the one in particular needed for this challenging requirement wasn’t listed in the main results. There are many unique sources. And while the market is becoming more and more transparent, still the number of different product types all with their own specifications and requirements, in different material grades don’t make it easy to find them. And that being sad, what we all want is to have one location for everything.
